At the heart of my work is a deep belief in the power of handmade art—particularly pottery—as a meaningful presence in today’s world. In an age where industrial production often replaces the need for handcrafted objects, I see the role of the potter not as diminished, but redefined. Handmade vessels speak through an honest visual language—one that carries the unmistakable mark of the human hand and the quiet intimacy of thoughtful making.
My goal is to create a visual and tactile relationship between the viewer and the work. By emphasizing the qualities unique to wheel-thrown pottery, I invite interaction—an experience that stands in contrast to a culture driven by mechanical perfection. Nearly all of my ceramic work begins on the pottery wheel, where the dialogue between my hands and the clay becomes a direct expression of my artistic voice. Using a collection of handcrafted tools I’ve developed over the years, I continually explore new ways to highlight the presence of the maker in every piece. As potter Warren MacKenzie once said, “It is only when the user feels the presence of the hand of the potter that communication truly exists.” That philosophy guides everything I create.
I earned my BFA in Art Education with a focus in Ceramics from Metropolitan State University of Denver in 2015 and bring over two decades of experience working with clay. My work is deeply influenced by the natural world—textures found in tree bark, the movement of wood grain, and the organic irregularities shaped by time and environment. I’m equally inspired by historical potters who translated nature into form, particularly folk potters whose practices were rooted in community, utility, and landscape. These traditions inform my work while allowing space for a contemporary, personal ceramic language to emerge.
Experimentation is central to my practice, especially in the development of custom glaze recipes for cone 10 gas firings and Raku. I’m drawn to surfaces that are unpredictable yet inviting—where softness meets texture and subtle variation creates depth. My aim is to produce colors and finishes that resonate instinctively, drawing viewers in before they can fully articulate why.
